General Questions

What is Web Hosting?

We specialize in Web Hosting, which means that you can find a home for your web site on our UNIX web servers and establish a presence on the Internet. We specialize in giving you the resources to put up an online site that allows you to get your products and information across globally without having to worry about exorbitant costs or unstable systems. Purchasing your own servers, connections, routers, etc. can be costly and inefficient.

We give you the ability to "rent" space on our reliable, feature-packed systems for a minimal fee and get off to a quick start on building your site. We even help you register your own domain name (www.yourdomain.com), which will become your unique address on the World Wide Web. Having your own domain name does not suggest that you are renting web space and since email can be addressed to your domain (eg.yourname@yourdomain.com) you will not have to announce a new email address if you change internet providers. Just let us worry about the technical stuff and you can focus on the actual content of your web site.

Do you offer dial-up, DSL or Cable Internet access?

No, you will need local Internet access in order to maintain your web site and retrieve email addressed to your site. Providing a specialized service means that we do not have hundreds of modems to maintain enabling us to devote more time to our customers and to the addition of enhancements to our specialized web hosting services.

Does it matter which Internet Server Provider I use (e.g. AT&T, MSN, AOL, etc...)?

You may use any ISP. As long as you have an internet connection you can access our servers to make changes (via FTP) to your site.

Do you offer web page design services?

Yes, we offer web page design services, web page consulting, web page development, custom scripting services, and database integration. To discuss these services and pricing, or for more information, or to get a price quote for your specific project contact consulting@web3hosting.com.

Do you have any data transfer charge for MB's/month?

Yes. Data transfer amounts vary per package. Rarely will a user exceed the allotted amount, if they do an additional charge is added to their invoice. You can find the latest pricing on the Hosting Plans page. Just click on Hosting Plans and scroll to the bottom. If you consistently exceed your plan allotment you should consider upgrading to the next higher plan. It's always cheaper to purchase disk space and data transfer amounts up-front.

Do I have to have a domain name to sign up for a hosting plan?

No, you can sign up without a domain name and then add it later. All of our plans allow more than one domain name per account. You can easily add and delete domain names from the control panel. You will have to first register any domain name you wish to use.

Is my plan's data transfer going to be enough to support my web site?

Our experience has shown that almost all clients NEVER exceed their bandwidth for the average web site. Depending on the quantity and sizes of your files, our plans should support many thousands of hits per month. Note that only 1%-2% of our customers have exceeded their allotment of data transfer threshold.

Can I resell space within my own account?

These accounts are not designed for resellers. Our Control Panel interface is designed specifically for the end-user making it easier for our customers to perform their tasks.

Do you accept international orders?

Yes. We are pleased to have customers from around the world and we're as close as your computer!

Most of our customers, in fact, are corporations and businesses expanding into the online arena. These plans provide an environment whereby payment information (such as a credit card numbers) can be transmitted from a web browser to the web server in an encrypted mode. Back to Top

Do you offer pre-configured cgi scripts?

Yes, every plan comes with the following:
BBS (forum)
COUNTER
CHAT
FORMMAIL
GUESTBOOK
You can install and remove these scripts from your Control Panel. Below is a list of features with each script:

BBS
Its main feature is that "it allows a user to post messages as well as post replies to existing messages. WebBBS keeps track of which messages are posts and which ones are replies and displays them in a hierarchical tree-like fashion. Posts that start new topics are at the top of each tree, and the replies are shown indented beneath the original posts. WebBBS is also fully integrated with the user authentication library discussed above. Additionally, it allows a user to restrict the number of messages through a variety of query mechanisms. The user can conduct a keyword search and display only those messages that satisfy the search. The user can also select a range of dates within which the viewed messages were posted. For example, a user could choose to see only messages posted between 6/1/96 and 6/10/96. In addition, the user can select a range of posts based on age in days, and choose to see, for example, only those messages posted between two days ago and four days ago."

COUNTER
Features include: blocking of multiple hits from the same user, insertion of commas, text-based or graphical modes, supports multiple counters from the same script, and tracks users' browsers, operating systems, and location.

CHAT
WebChat is a useful application that allows a number of people on the World Wide Web to talk to one another simultaneously. The ability to chat on the Web can be a quick way to hold a virtual meeting.

FORMMAIL
FormMail is a generic WWW form to e-mail gateway, which will parse the results of any form and send them to the specified user. This script has many formatting and operational options, most of which can be specified through the form, meaning you don't need any programming knowledge or multiple scripts for multiple forms. This also makes FormMail the perfect system-wide solution for allowing users form-based user feedback capabilities without the risks of allowing freedom of CGI access.

GUESTBOOK
Extropia's WebGuestbook is "configurable so that you can specify what your guestbook file looks like and how the script-generated responses are displayed. Most of the configuration takes little more than a knowledge of HTML, so it is fairly easy to use. In addition, the user can select a range of posts based on age in days, and choose to see."

Overage fees are located at the bottom of the page.

To upgrade your account simply log in to your Control Panel and click on Account. Under your Plan Name click on change and select a larger plan.

How do I register a domain name and sign up for hosting at the same time?

You can perform either task in either order. You can sign up with a domain name you have already registered or you can sign up and then go back and add the domain name to your account. Remember, each plan can host more than one domain name. Your domain name will take about 24-72 hours to propagate throughout the internet and be usable. In the meantime you can publish your site using the temporary address that you receive in the Welcome email.

I already own a domain name, how do I host it with Web3Hosting?

Make sure your domain name is added to your account. This will be automatic if you listed your domain name while you were signing up. If you did not list your domain name just log into your Control Panel and click on Account then click on Quick Access. Click on Domains to go to your domain list. Click on Add new Domain and follow the prompts. Next, go to your domain name registrar and change your DNS settings for your domain. You will need to point the domain to ns.web3hosting.com and ns1.web3hosting.com. Once this is complete it will take about 24 to 72 hours for the changes to propogate throughout the internet.

Do you support third level domains (name.yourdomain.com)?

Yes. You can add up to your plan's limit of subdomains. The only restriction is that you have the main domain name (ie yourdomain.com) with us and the sub domain has to be in the form of: yoursubdomain.yourdomain.com.

I want to change my domain name. Is it too late to change it?

Once you register a domain name, you cannot "un-register" it. If you find that the domain name you chose no longer suits your business or personal needs, you should register another domain name. You can then add that domain name to your account in the Control Panel. If you choose, you can remove the old domain name from your account. The domain name you originally registered will continue to be registered to you until the end of the registration period. Registration fees are non-refundable.

How do I transfer my domain registration to Web3Hosting.com?

It's easy. From our home page do the following:
1. Click on Domain Registration to go to the domain section of our web site.
2. Click on Manage My Account
3. Click on Domain Names.
4. Login with your Domain Registration ID and password. Note: This is a different account than your hosting account. If you haven't created a Domain Registration account create one by filling out the New Users section instead of logging in.
5. After you have successfully logged in click on Transfer a Domain.
6. Follow the on-screen prompts. Note: Transfering registrars is different from domain transfers. A domain transfer means that you are merely updating your domain name server records at your current registrar to point it to our servers. You do not need to transfer your registration to use your domain name on our servers.

When transferring a domain registration you may have to contact your original registrar and follow their instructions for transferring domains. Some registrars perform this automatically via email. Follow the instructions your registrar provides to complete the domain transfer process.

What does it mean to transfer your domain?

When you transfer your domain you are just pointing it to our servers. This means when someone types your domain name in their browser it will go to your site on our servers. In order to transfer your domain you must go to the registrar where you purchased your domain name and update your DNS records. We will gladly help you handle your domain transfer.

What is domain propagation?

When a visitor types your domain name into their Web browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When your site location changes to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added, nameservers around the world must be notified of the change. This process is referred to as propagation. Propagation normally requires 24-72 hours. During this period, if you are transferring your domain, some nameservers will refer to the old location of your site and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor accessing your site may be directed to either the old or new location. That's why it is best to cancel your old hosting company after the name server changes have propagated.

What is the difference between a domain transfer and a domain registration transfer?

They are very different. A registration transfer means you are changing registrars. Transfering registrars is different from a domain transfer. A domain transfer means that you are merely updating your domain name server records at your current registrar to point it to our servers.

How do I access my Control Panel?

I keep getting mail telling me to renew my domain, I just bought it how can this be?

If you have registered domain names in the past, be on the lookout for letters purporting to warn you of the impending expiration of your domains, or a "special offer" to "renew" your domains. A handful of companies are mass mailing fraudulent renewal notices to domain name registrants in an effort to trick them into transferring their domain names to a different registrar. In many cases, the other registrar is offering an inferior level of service at a higher price.

If you receive a renewal notice that you don't recognize, contact your registrar to verify its validity. If you are a web3hosting.com customer, send e-mail to support@web3hosting.com if you would like assistance determining the validity of a domain renewal notice that you have received.

What is FTP, how do I use it?

The Basics: File Transfer Protocol

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which is the most common way of transferring files from one computer to another. This is how most uploading and downloading is done over the Internet. In this article we're going to give you a general guide to using a graphical FTP program. Because every FTP program is different, make sure you read your program's documentation to learn about its specific features.

If you don't have an FTP program, you can download one. Here are some of the more common programs for Windows:

WS_FTP http://www.wsftp.com/
CuteFTP http://www.cuteftp.com/
FTP Explorer http://www.ftpx.com/
And for Macintosh:

Fetch http://www.fetchsoftworks.com/

All of these allow you to download a free trial copy, which will work for a limited amount of time. You may want to do this before you download the non-free version to make sure you feel comfortable with it.

To upload files, first open your FTP program and connect to your server. It will ask you for some information. Here's what you'll need to give it:
Host Name/Address: your server name such as: ftp.web3hosting.com Once your domain is fully functional you can use: ftp.yourdomain.com (substitute yourdomain.com with your Fully Qualified Domain Name) . If you don't know your server name, login to the Account Control Center: Once you're logged in, look for web options click there. It will say IP Address: and will list your IP there. You'll just need to put that in your FTP program. User ID: your account username (this is a login name that is the same as your control panel login, with a maximum of 8 characters) Password: your account password. Generally anything else it asks for can be left alone, but check your program's documentation if you have any problems. Most, if not all, graphical FTP programs work in the same way. They have a two-pane interface. On the left side are the files on your home computer. On the right are the files on the server. You'll want to make sure you upload your Web files to your Web directory. So once you're connected to the server, double-click on the yourdomain.com folder in the right pane. Upload files by dragging them with your mouse from the left pane to the right pane. There will also be a button (usually an arrow) that you can click to do the same thing. You can update a file on the server by simply uploading the revised copy of the file. You'll get a message asking if you want to overwrite the old file. Select 'yes.' This should get you started using a graphical FTP program. To learn more, please read your specific program's documentation.

I can't see my site? What is wrong?

If you receive the message "There is no DNS entry for http://www.yourdomain.com", there are several possible explanations: Try to reach the site using the IP address. If you are successful, the domain name is either not active or not yet propagated. For a NEW domain, it may take up to a week for the name to be released by InterNIC and propagated to DNS's (Domain Name Servers) throughout the Internet. (Foreign domains and transfers take longer). If it is an older domain that has previously been reachable, the name may be on hold with InterNIC. Contact InterNIC via http://networksolutions.com directly to determine the reason the name is on hold. It may be due to non payment or a lost payment. If you can reach the site with the IP address and you know it has been more than 72 hours since the name was released by InterNIC: Clear your browser cache and try again. If you are using Netscape Navigator, first select Options | Network Preferences, then choose the Cache tab. Click on the buttons "Clear Memory Cache Now" and "Clear Disk Cache Now" and OK, then click Reload. For Internet Explorer Select View | Options, then the Navigation tab and click "Clear History" and OK, then click Refresh. If you know that others are able to reach the site with the domain name but you can't (even after clearing the Cache), contact your local ISP. They may not have updated their DNS records. If you are still unable to reach it after all of these steps, contact support@web3hosting.com for assistance. Be sure to describe all the steps you have already taken. If you are unable to reach the site with either the domain name OR the IP address you may be experiencing connectivity problems.

What is meant by "we Support FrontPage extensions"?

According to Microsoft's documentation for FrontPage Web Presence Providers, "Installing the FrontPage Server Extensions gives your customers full support for all of the features of FrontPage. This includes remote authoring, threaded discussion groups, full-text search, and surveys." Web3Hosting.com supports Microsoft FrontPage in several ways: We configure your site for FrontPage by installing and maintaining the server extensions. We provide Technical Support related to the functionality of the extensions. We point FrontPage users to resources that will help you solve problems, publish your FrontPage webs and learn. Web3Hosting.com DOES NOT provide direct technical support related to the use of your FrontPage software. User issues are referred to Microsoft's Technical Support Team (Link to http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.asp)

What are "Server Extensions"?

FrontPage Extensions are programs which provide the server side implementation of FrontPage. FrontPage communicates with the extensions via HTTP using a Remote Procedure Call (RPC). When the server sees the "POST" request addressed to the FrontPage server extensions it simply directs the request to the appropriate program. The extensions implement authoring (uploading/downloading documents, ToDo Lists), administration (setting end-user, author, and administrator privileges), and dynamic content (browse-time WebBot components). Without the FrontPage Server Extensions you will not be able to take advantage of the WebBots that are available through FrontPage. Also, without the extensions you cannot author and administer your web using the tools provided as part of the FrontPage Editor/Explorer package.

How do I get the FrontPage extensions installed on my site?

To have the FrontPage server extensions installed on your existing site, login to your control panel and enable them in the Web Options category. Make sure that you have a back-up of any web pages currently on the site. (In most cases it is not necessary to delete files currently on the site to install the extensions. However, if there are directories or files with special permissions (.htaccess) these will have to be removed. You can then re-establish permissions and password protection via the FrontPage Explorer.) hours.

Is there a charge for the server extensions?

There is no charge for installing the server extensions. It can be completed through the Control Panel.

Are there any limitations when publishing with FrontPage?

There are some issues that potential FrontPage users should consider: Web size -- This seems to be most critical when a "searchable event" is present in the web (Search, Discussion Forum and Table of Contents). The lengthy process of updating the indices for these functions can lead to the connection timing-out (HTTP 500 Error or 'Server has timed-out'). Disk Usage -- You may create and publish as many child webs as your disk storage space allows. However, for each child web you publish, FrontPage duplicates certain information into indices and hidden files. This adds "overhead", increasing the storage space required for your files. Microsoft's documentation notes, "FrontPage's optional full-text search indexes can take up to the same amount of disk space as your textual content."

Can I use FTP as well as FrontPage to manage my site?

There are several precautions which need to be taken to protect the FrontPage extensions on your site: a) Setting passwords, limiting access, setting file permissions or deleting directories or files in a FrontPage web should only be done through the options in FrontPage Explorer. b) Do NOT use regular FTP (such as WS_FTP) to upload files to the server when FrontPage extensions are installed. This may corrupt the extensions, disabling the interactive features available with FrontPage. NOTE: The exception to this is when loading custom scripts to the local directory on your site.

What is a WebBot?

WebBots are the mechanism for invoking many of the interactive features built into FrontPage. These features are added to your web through the FrontPage Editor | Insert WebBot Component Some, such as Include and Substitution allow elements of the web to be entered once and included in any or all of the pages by inserting the Bot component referencing that element (e.g. a logo or navigation bar). Changes made to the "master" element are made automatically to any page containing the referencing Bot. Other Bots, such as Search, Table of Contents and Timestamp, control dynamic browse-time features. These Bots work behind the scenes to keep the web up-to-date for visitors. For more information on using the Bots, see the documentation provided with FrontPage or contact Microsoft Technical Support.

Are all the features available in FrontPage supported?

What is an email alias and is it unlimited?

An e mail alias means if you send mail to webmaster@yourname.com, that address is aliased (forwarded) to whomever needs to receive it. It can be one person or multiple people, however you need to set up the forwarding in your Control Panel. This is especially useful for individuals running small companies that want email addresses in their domain name forwarded to their private email addresses. To set it up, got to your Control Panel, then Mail Manager. You can click on any of the email accounts on the left and edit them. Once you have clicked on an email account, you should check the "Forward email addressed to to address(es) outside your domain" check box and then supply the email addresses to forward to in the box below.

What are aliases?

Aliases are different names for the same mailbox.
For example: You run a one-person business, but you want your website to make it look as if your company is much larger, with several departments. You can use e-mail addresses like sales@yourbusiness.com, info@yourbusiness.com, and tech@yourbusiness.com which will all point to one mailbox. In this way, it makes your company look as if there are several people behind it, running different areas, when in actuality each alias simply points to one mailbox.

Each of our hosting plans allow you to set up a specific number of aliases for free. We can set up additional aliases for a small charge.

What are Autoresponders?

Whether you are responding to the same type of e-mail on a daily basis or you would just like to add an automatic response to e-mails sent to a specific domain address, you can accomplish such a task using the "autoresponder" feature . An autoresponder will send a standard response e-mail message (based on a text file you specify) to anyone who sends an e-mail to a specific e-mail address (which you specify) at your domain. Each of our hosting plans allow you to set up a specific number of autoresponders for free. We can set up additional autoresponders for a small additional charge. most autoresponder messages are limited in character length, usually between 250 and 1200 characters.
